No luck yet.
Opening morning was a comfortable morning for sitting, unfortunately I didn’t see anything. I did have a little buck fawn stop by in the evening, but I let him walk as it is still pretty early in the season.
Temperatures have been just about perfect for sitting. That can be a bit of a double edged sword though since the deer are perfectly comfortable bedding down for the day too. There is some colder temps and the possibility of snow later in the week, which should get them moving as the front moves though.
As much as I like being in my ground blind or in a tree when its 40 out, there is something magical about being in the woods when there is a layer of snow on the ground. The current forecast is predicting we could have a lot of snow, but being on the south shore of lake superior can be fairly unpredictable. Get too close to the lake and the “warmer by the lake” effect makes it rain, while a few miles south is getting pounded with snow.
I live in an area that often gets hit with a band of lake effect snow. The exact location that gets hit changes with each storm that rolls though. It’s not unusual for me to get an inch or two while my parents that are only 10 miles south of me get a foot or more, or vise versa.
I am hoping we do get some snow. It just makes so many aspects of hunting easier. You can see where the deer have been walking. If you shoot and need to do a little tracking, a fresh layer of snow can tell you exactly what you need to know.
There is of course the possibility that we get too much snow. Any more that a couple inches and now your not going for a walk in the woods, but trudging though knee deep snow and tripping over hidden branches. That’s no fun.
Figures crossed its a light snow and our group get a little luck later this week.
